If you suspect a learning disorder, this is the doctor to see.

Excellent doctor. Kind, caring, takes the time to answer all of your questions in detail. Wait times at his office were 10 minutes or less.

I am close to an adolescent female 14 years of age who was battling severe depression. While it wasn't a surprise since it runs rampant in her family, it ended up running much deeper than that. She also happened to have bad grades in school, especially in reading and math, which worsened as middle school progressed. Her family had attributed the bad grades to the depression. Her middle school did their own testing and strongly suggested she had ADHD. I think that is the throw around diagnosis when they don't know what is wrong.

Upon meeting the young lady, Dr. McManus starting running extensive testing on her, suspecting something else was going on just by talking to her and observing her body language and lack of eye contact.

The family of this young lady didn't want her loaded up on medications just to pacify the school, and this doctor made sure that didn't happen since it wasn't warranted.

His diagnosis was Non Verbal Learning Disorder. His dissertation was on NVLD, so he is well versed and extremely knowledgeable on the topic.

After the diagnosis and in depth explanation from Dr. McManus and tons of reading the family did, suddenly all the odd behaviors this young lady had exhibited since a toddler all made sense.

It's been 3 years since the diagnosis, and since then this young lady is excelling in school, not depressed because she has the tools to deal with her learning disorder and has gained her confidence back.

Dr. McManus went above and beyond for this patient. He even attended an IEP meeting at her then High School with the family to explain the disorder to the special Ed department since they weren't very familiar with it, and recommended specific services to help this young lady succeed.

Since this disorder is not recognized as a "specific" learning disorder it is very hard to get help for it within the educational system. I am working on changing that, so that these kids no longer fall between the cracks and get the help they deserve.
