So far, it’s been very good. I recommend taking paper based courses, but with the option of online exams. This way there is nothing to snail mail back and forth, and everything has been graded very quickly. But for the math classes, online is better than paper/book. The online math courses are very easy to navigate and the online explanations are easy to understand. All the staff I’ve had contact with have been very helpful, but to have anything recorded and remembered, you must put it into actual writing. American (in Lansing IL) is very affordable compared to other accredited distance schools, if you choose a diploma program. You can pay a little extra for more lab sciences, all online math courses, and extra math courses. Since it is self paced, it is possible to graduate in less than four years. Expect to do your own writing for every assignment. With the online tests, you can write in your own preferred word processor at your own pace, and then copy your work into their website. It’s very easy to use.

WAY too tight grading system. I may have to work harder, but when i was homeschooling for NDCDE, i did not have to complain about their issues. Please fix the grading system...

Overall, not bad. Thankfully, since I enrolled my daughter, they have an online option. We're still using the paper option and it takes up to three weeks to get a test graded. One math book got lost in the mail, forcing us to try to finish the last two math classes in time to graduate before my daughter enters college in a few months. I'd recommend hiring a very good math tutor for their Algebra and Geometry courses. The text is terrible and the study guide is useless. They are, however, accredited and their curriculum meets college entrance standards.

I was very disappointed with this school. I was quite sure I read the application very carefully and it was to my demise that I read the contents wrong. I was not aware that they go about payments per course. I thought I signed up for it by monthly payments. I didn't understand why it was taking a long time to receive courses that NJ requires. They told me if I need more books for him I had to send additional payments and I'm like my payment is not due tip the 1st. I had just enrolled him and frankly I do not want him to sit around all day doing nothing. I'm not sure of this school yet. Why will I send them more money when it hasn't come evident to me that this is a school fit for my son? I have my daughter enrolled in American Online High School for AP/Honors and they sent all of her classes. I enrolled her a week after my son and he receives only psychology!? What? So I removed him before it becomes a bigger issue and more money is lost. So far the other school is doing good for me even though they had their issues in the past. There are many home school programs now. I just don't understand why people run so many games. Sometimes you get what you pay for. By the way, they send every correspondence to the student and nothing to the parent unless it is for a payment. I found that to be very odd and unprofessional.

Do not do the payment plan they offer I enrolled my daughter for freshman year in American schools they told me she would be working at her own pace. Starting out it was all good but after three books they demanded double payments before she could receive her next one stating she was finishing them to fast. The school year ending isn't up until October clearly I told them she would be attending public school in August for her soft more year. So how is it that she can work at her own pace but when she finishes the book early which wasn't early the books estimated time to finish was 6 weeks they say they can't send her another one unless two payments are made the next two months for each book
So I asked so what am I suppose to to do keep her out of school for the next two months ? The advisor said well she is working faster than scheduled and finishing them early. So don't be in a rush to make your child do the work because my daughter works three hours a day on a subject I guess they only intend for your child to do school work an hour or less per day so really what kind of school is this ?definitely not a work at your own pace unless your slow ! And they don't stick with the payment plan as scheduled ! I wouldn't recommend.end this school to anyone !

Never had a problem with this school. Every time I had to call for a question they have been very helpful. I could send in exams at my own pace as long as I didnt try sending in like 3 exams in the same envelope, I was good. They do take 2-3 weeks to grade and then another week to get your exam back. Best bet is to continue doing exams anyway and send them in.

I love this school. I do the online program and it's very good pace it's not to hard and not to easy. The teachers for each class were super nice. When I was finishing up my English literature class I had a hard time with the question you had to answer after reading the book but the teacher walked me through it and this is my second year going here and I will continue.

I graduated in 2001 from American School!
I started homeschooling because of the public school system. In my town it was failing. And still is. I started my sophomore year. Even with a having a baby, I still graduated on time. I went through the correspondence program. I thought it was Great! Worked at my own pace. I would recommend it to anyone!
